This is the first time in five days that I can function like an actual human being. I have been terribly sick with a cold. I may be sick, but Calliope has been quite busy with one of her newer chews, the Merrick's Naturally Stuffed Twin Hoofers.
What it is: A cow hoof. A whole cow hoof!
What's it stuffed with: Tendons, cartilage, fat, skin, and bones.
What my dog thinks of it: THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER!
Now, let me say this: this chew requires supervision! Okay, so most chews and toys carry a warning label stating that you should supervise your dog when using that particular chew/toy. This chew is no exception: "For the safety of your pets, observation is recommended when giving your pets bones or chews. Keep fresh water available at all times." Some of us listen to this warning while others don't. Please watch your dog while it chews this treat! There are many small pieces (i.e. bones) that your dog will break off. It's part of the thrill of this particular chew. I have taken pictures of the progression of how my dog chewed the Twin Hoofers apart, so please take a peek at the gallery.
I ordered the Hoofers from Petco.com and paid $6.99. Petco regularly has sales, so you can get it anywhere between $4 - $6.99. Calliope could smell the Hoofers in the box before I even had a chance to get it open. The Twin Hoofers was nearly the size of her head! When I unwrapped it, I immediately noticed that it was very greasy. I highly recommend wiping the grease off with a paper towel. The first thing Calliope did was lick off the oils. She then ate, er, fat? Cartilage? I really don't know what it was, but she ate a lot of it, along with a bunch of skin.
Then she threw up. I had no idea that she ate so much of...whatever it was. She wasn't too interested in it after that. I took it from her and placed it on a shelf out of her reach.
Fast forward about a week. Because I was sick and, for the most part, confined to my bed, I gave Calliope the Twin Hoofers to entertain herself. In five days she has managed to consume everything but the bones and nails. The bones are small enough to pose a choking hazard. As soon as she had them loose, I confiscated them.
The Merrick Naturally Stuffed Twin Hoofers provided my dog with days of entertainment. In fact, she is still working on the nails! This is not something you give your dog and walk away. You need to monitor your pet. You should also limit the amount your dog chews per day. I didn't do this and found myself with a dog with soft stools from the high fat content and natural oils.
Will I buy this again? YES!
Do I recommend this product? YES!
Is this chew gruesome looking: YES, but I don't mind! Your dog will love it, and that's what counts!
